In sports there are times when one team seemingly can’t do anything wrong. The majority of last night’s match went that way for the Washington High School boys’ soccer team. The Demons defeated their Southeast Conference opponent, the Fairfield Trojans, by a tally of 10 – 2 last night.
Chris Avila got the goal party started early, putting the ball into the Fairfield net in the first minute of play. Avila would later add another goal to his credit. From there it was the Mason Quigley show.
Quigley would score three goals before the half ended to push the momentum even further in Washington’s favor. Joe Smith got in on the scoring end of things as well, pushing two balls into net.
Cirilo Marcelino would also find the Trojan net before the half ended. Jacob Baughman didn’t have to work very hard in goal for the Demons because of Washington’s dominance on possessing the ball in the first half. At halftime the score was 8 – 0, Demons leading.
“We finished the ball tonight. That’s something we’ve spent a lot of time on and it made all the difference,” Washington head coach Steven Caulk said.
Fairfield came out in the second half determined to play better and they did. At points, Washington’s lack of depth showed in the tired legs of the Demon players.
“The guys were tired; that’s what happens when you play ‘Iron-Man’ soccer for 80 minutes,” Caulk added.
The Trojans were able to push two goals past Baughman, but Washington matched them with goals from Marcelino and Jacy Chalupa. Baughman played all 80 minutes in goal for the Demons, making 11 saves.
Washington improves its record to 3 – 1 overall, 1 – 0 in SEC matches. The Demons take the field again on Tuesday, April 22 at home against Keokuk.
