The Washington girls track team held its 43rd annual invitational track meet Thursday, April 20, where they ended in third place out of six schools participating.

Hannah Anderson took first place in the long jump going 15 feet and 1/4 inch.

Following in second place was Isabel Bailey who went 15 feet 9 inches.

Anderson had an impressive finish in the 100-meter dash as she had a time of 12.57 to take first place in that event.

Bailey took second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:06.44.

Leah Marek, Ashley Telleen, Jenah Greiner and Anderson ran the 4x200-meter relay in 1:49.14 to take first place.

In the 4x400-meter relay, Telleen, Greiner, Bailey and Anderson made up the first-place team having a time of 4:19.29.

Coach Stefanie Tschantz says the meet itself went really well.

“We weren’t really focused too much on team points,” she says. “I just wanted to see what a couple of individuals could do.

“We were also trying to drop some relay times. We are on the bubble to qualify for the Drake Relays. Conditions weren’t in our favor tonight, but overall, we ran great.”

While the official results for Drake haven’t been released yet, Tschantz says several could have the chance to take part next week.

“We’re looking at our 4x1 and Hannah Anderson in the open 100 and in the long jump as well.”

Speaking of Anderson, she has made some great finishes this season and Tschantz is pleased to see her progress.

“She’s a very strong runner. Every time out, she shows more competitiveness.

“It’s fun to see that whatever race we put her in, she’s going to give everything she has.”

Anderson isn’t the only one with strong finishes Thursday.

“Jenah Greiner, Ashley Telleen, Isabel Bailey, Leah Marek, Makenzi Marek and Claire Horak all had a great night,” Tschantz says.

“It was a busy, busy night, but it was fun to see everybody work hard together.”

The next couple of meets will be different than usual.

“We compete at Burlington Monday,” Tschantz says. “That’s a nine and 10 meet; our upperclassmen aren’t going to that one.

“The next meet Thursday, at WACO won’t have our Drake qualifiers, so it’s going to be a different type of week.

“We will just run hard in practice. We will change things up at WACO and have some fun.”

As the end of the season draws near, there are still some things Tschantz will focus on with the team.

“With conference and districts coming, we are still trying to work out what’s going to go, what will work, what we want to see, who will be where. There’s a lot of things up in the air right now. They are all good challenges to have.”

The meet at Burlington, Monday, April 24, starts at 4:30 p.m.
