Demons boys basketball to begin season

Dec 01, 2017

By Xiomara Levsen, The JOURNAL

The Washington boys’ basketball team will start its season tonight at home.

Head coach Collin Stark said he’s optimistic about his team, especially with the leadership from the upperclassmen.

“This senior class has had a lot of varsity experience with it,” Stark said. “We also have a few juniors that can help us out and a very good sophomore class. The guys have been working very hard and have been putting in a lot of time and hopefully that will pay off.”

There are seven seniors on the team, who have been playing together since fourth grade, he added.

The team has had a few weeks to get ready for its first game in practice. They’ve worked on running a lot.

“We run every single day,” Stark said, “with getting transition buckets and then [on] the defensive end. We’ve got to stop people to get in our transition, so we’ve been definitely working on that and just execution on the offensive end.”

Tonight the team will face Muscatine, which Stark says will be tough competition for the team.

Jack Redlinger and Dalton Myers, who are both seniors on the team this year, said they are looking forward to tonight.

“Mostly looking forward to shutting [Joe] Wieskamp down,” Myers said. “If we can do that and keep our heads in then we can stay in the game.”

Wieskamp has committed to the University of Iowa and will be a formidable opponent for Washington.

Myers is telling his teammates to have a positive attitude on the court tonight.

“You just don’t want to get down 10 first quarter and give up on it,” he said. “It’s all about competing.”

Both of them are hoping fans come out to support the team tonight.

“You always want to start off the year right and want people to show support,” Redlinger said. “We will go out and do our best, I guess, and play.”
