It may seem that winning a Southeast Conference championship came easy for the Washington High School girls golf team. What looks easy requires a lot of determination and teamwork.

The Demons had the top five individual scores at the conference tournament Monday in Mount Pleasant and nearly bested second-place Mount Pleasant by 100 strokes.

“I wasn’t sure how things would go, but the girls were focused and thing fell into place for us,” WHS coach Len Kull said.

Sarah Nacos was the conference champion with a par 72 at the Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club as Washington had a dominant outing, shooting a 315 for first place.

“We had a 152 for our first nine and I don’t know that I have ever seen a score that low,” Kull said. “We came in with a 163 so we were throwing some lofty scores up there.”

The Demons had the top five individual scores. Nacos shot 35 on the first nine and a 37 on her second nine. Kiki Guo shot 37-39—76. Anna Nacos fired scores of 39-41—80. Josie Tanner posted scores of 41-46—87. Megan Strabala had a 45-44 — 89. Allison Vogel shot 48-50—98.

“To have three girls in the 30s on the first nine was great for us,” Kull said.

Washington would have swept all six medals but Mount Pleasant’s Anni Liechty broke up the potential sweep by shooting a 95 for sixth. The top six finishers made all-conference. Vogel was honorable mention.

“We have had a real good run,” Kull said. “I think that may have been our sixth or seventh consecutive conference title but I don’t know. It is important to keep looking forward.”

That is an important trait to have in golf. Regardless of the last shot, it is important to focus on the next one.

Vogel’s highest score on a hole was an eight, but she posted a four on the next one. Sarah Nacos had eight pars and a birdie on her front nine. She followed her first bogey of the day with a par, then a birdie. Guo had four birdies in her round. Anna Nacos had one birdie.

“It was great to see so many low scores from so many people,” Kull said.

All four SEC teams will be in Davenport Monday for the Class 4A regional tournament.

The regional finals will be at Emeis Park Golf Course and will be hosted by Assumption High School.

“I think we got a good draw, but we still have to perform,” Kull said. “They don’t let you mail in your scores.”

TEAM SCORES — 1. Washington 315, 2. Mt. Pleasant 410, 3. Keokuk 395, 4. Fairfield 508.
