Demons earn win No. 2 vs. Fairfield

By Hunter Tickel | Sep 26, 2013

After falling behind 1-0 to the Fairfield volleyball team, Washington could have thrown in the towel — it did get swept by the Trojans earlier in the season.
But the Demons responded with aplomb, taking game two in extra points 28-26 and set three 15-8 for the win.
“I think it surprised everyone a little bit,” said head coach Julianna Berg. “If you would have been there and seen it, you wouldn’t have been surprised at all. Things were flowing and everyone was doing their job.”
With its first win in 13 games, Washington experienced a feeling that it hopes can become familiar.
“Everybody was so excited and happy about it,” Berg said. “I kind of thought that might be a turning point for us. All we need is a little bit of confidence. We have all the tools. We are so close.”
Sophomore Amber Salow led the team with five kills. Salow had 13 attack attempts along with hitting errors. She did not attempt a serve.
Junior Sydney Hoffman was second on the team with four kills. She also did not have a kill error. She had a kill on each of her attack attempts. She had a team-high two aces on 12-for-12 serving.
Sophomore Emma Stout matched her with two aces.
Junior Rachel Hall had team-highs of 16 assists and eight digs.
Junior Anna Wheeler had the second most digs on the team with seven.
In its other four matches at the Ottumwa Invite, Washington fell 0-2.
Tuesday, Washington hosted Fort Madison and was competitive in all but one of the four games.
“We started off really strong,” Berg said. “We looked really clean and crisp, especially the first game. I was pleased that we competed the first two games. We made them work for those games.”
It lost by six in the opening game, eight in the second one, and earned a win in game three 26-24 before being blown out 25-4 to end the night.
“It started to fall apart little by little,” Berg said. “You could see that it didn’t look right for them out there.”
