Demons run at Mount Pleasant

Mar 30, 2018

MT. PLEASANT — Two area teams were in Mt. Pleasant Thursday for a coed high school track meet. Washington and Mid-Prairie each brought both teams to the Panther Relays. The meet was unscored.

“I thought the girls did a great job last night, times really dropped from Tuesday, and you could tell some of those first-meet jitters were gone, which was good to see,” Washington head girls coach Stefanie Tschantz said. “I thought Ashley Telleen had a great night. She had a great split in the sprint medley and then won the 400 meter hurdles. She led from the time the gun went off.”

The Demons had five second place finishes, two of which came in individual events. Ethan Hunt took second in the boys’ 400-meter dash, finishing in 53.56 seconds, and Jenah Greiner was second in the girls’ 200-meter dash, crossing the tape in 27.72 seconds.

“Jenah looked extremely strong again last night,” Tschantz said. “She finished second in the open 200 with a solid time and also ran some great splits in her relays.”

The girls’ 4x200 meter team of Leah Marek, Isabel Bailey, Greiner and Hannah Anderson took the silver in 1:51.96. The girls’ 4x100 team of Marek, Greiner, Trinia Griffin and Anderson placed second in 53.63 seconds.

“Leah Marek had a solid night as every relay (sprint med, 4x200 and 4x100) she was on came home with a medal,” Tschantz said. “She works so hard in practice, so it’s nice to see her hard work paying off.”

The boys’ sprint medley team of Mario Tapia, Tanner Murphy, Sawyer Whisler and Hunt took the second spot in 1:40.23.

The girls’ 800-meter squad of Bailey, Griffin Telleen and Marek finished third in 2:02.53. Brennan Horak took third in the 3200-meter run, finishing in 10:31.06.

Mid-Prairie had a great meet, winning eight meets on the day, led by the Hostetler sisters, Anna and Marie, who dominated the distance events. Anna took the 3000-meter run in 10:08.81. Marie was right behind her in second place, in 10:09.06. Anna won the 1500-meter run in 4:58.39, with Marie finishing second in 5:00.82.

Peyton Miller took the 400-meter hurdles for Mid-Prairie, finishing in 58.35 seconds. Floyd Evans won the 1600-meter run in 4:34.61, and Kyle Miller won the long jump with a leap of 6-00.

Two Golden Hawk relay teams won. The boys’ 4X800 team of Marshal Teets, Cary Schaefer, Evans and Quinn Schmidt took first, in 8:19.72, and the boys’ distance medley team of Terrhyn Jacoby, P. Miller, Schmidt and Zach Pettit won in 3:505.08.

“A lot of our freshman have really improved since the first day of practice,” Tschantz said. ‘I know a few of them are running personal records right now. So, I know they are really excited about that and so are we. Alivia Emry has run PRs in her last two meets. Anna Venenga has improved a lot, with her running a PR last night. Cloe Telleen dropped eight seconds in her 400 from Tuesday night. It’s a lot of fun watching these girls realize that they can run times they didn’t think were possible.”
