A funeral service for Emery E. Bender, 90, of Kalona will be held Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church in Kalona with Pastor Floyd Helmuth officiating. Burial will follow in the East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the Pleasantview Home where Emery had resided for the past 28 years, and where he died on Wednesday, December 20, 2017.


Emery E. Bender was born December 11, 1927 in Washington County, Iowa, the son of Samuel E. and Gertrude (Gingerich) Bender. He worked at Maplecrest Turkey Plant, the Kalona Sales Barn and the car wash. Emery was a charter member of Sunnyside Conservative Church and enjoyed playing games, especially dominos and while he was still able to attend church services, he and his sister, Rosetta, would entertain guests in their home following the service, playing games and eating ice cream.


Survivors include his Sunnyside family and his Pleasantview family.


Preceding Emery in death were his parents; and infant brother, Cletus and his sister, Rosetta
