Emily Yoder Roberts, 94, of Kalona, died Tuesday, April 25, 2017 in the Pleasantview Home in Kalona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, in the Sharon Center United methodist Church with the Rev. Erling Shultz officiating. The body will be cremated following the service. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Sharon Center United Methodist Church. A memorial fund has been established for the church.

Mrs. Roberts was born Oct. 1, 1922 in Iowa City, the daughter of Omar and Emma (Petsel) Yoder. She graduated from Sharon Center High School and trained to be a registered nurse at the University of Iowa. She worked as a nurse at the University for many years. She married Wayne Roberts on Sept. 11, 1948 in the Sharon Center United Methodist Church. The Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting the family with Emily’s arrangements.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Jessamin Chapter where she served as Past Matron. She was a past president of the Johnson County Historical Society, and was also a member of the Questers and the Octagon Barn Questers. She was a member of the Sharon Center United Methodist Church, where she served in many ways, including directing the junior choir, singing in the choir, and teaching Sunday school and Bible school. She had a passion for weaving and did spinning and weaving demonstrations at the Kalona Historical Society and the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. Emily was known as a local barn historian active in planning local Barn Tours. She managed to get the Roberts Octagon Barn on the Historic Register. She gave many presentations all over Iowa on barns and their history and architecture. Emily loved everything about the state of Iowa. She enjoyed horse riding and Yoder family bike and canoe trips.

Surviving are her husband; three children, Nora Jane Roberts and husband Albert Noellsch of Oregon, Missouri, Paul Owen Roberts and wife Julie of Iowa City, and Mary Rathje and husband Steve of Cedar Rapids; two grandsons; four step-grandchildren; one sister, Charlotte Lackender of Kalona; a brother, Alan Yoder and wife Esther of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and a sister-in-law, Betz Yoder of Kalona.

Preceding Emily in death were her parents, and infant brother Elmer, a sister Mabel Hora, three brothers and sisters-in-law: Glenn (Marjorie) Yoder, Calvin Yoder and Theodore (Jeanne) Yoder.
