Engineering firmhired to design wellness park

An engineering firm was hired during the Washington City Council meeting Tuesday evening to design the proposed Wellness Park.

The council approved the $158,000 engineering proposal from MSA Professional Services of Ankeny to design and aid in construction of the city’s Wellness Park. According to the proposal, a concept draft will be given in August and a final concept design in September. A final design will be expected in February 2018, with a bid opening for the park in April 2018. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2018 and completion would be November 2019.

In December, the council had indicated it wanted to move ahead with the project and leave $1 million in the budget to be spent on the park, even though its primary partner, the YMCA of Washington County, remains an unknown.

The city sold about 5 acres of land on the proposed Wellness Park to the Y to be used for the construction of a new building.

After the failure of a bond referendum to help fund the building, the YMCA announced in May it plans to collect funding for a new $9 million facility to be constructed at West Fifth Street and North D Avenue as well as future expansions.

The first project for the park, to build a soccer field along 18th Street, is completed.
