Fire department receives grant

Last Thursday, the City of Washington received a grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation for the fire department’s building project.

The amount awarded to the new fire station building project was $100,000.

Work has already started on the new fire station’s site, just south of where the current location is at 215 East Washington Street.

“They’re working on locating the sewer and bringing the water pipes in,” Washington Fire Chief Tom Wide said.

He’s hoping the city will break ground on the new fire station by Sept. 1.

“We’ll start doing the footings and start the building project [then],” Wide added.

The fire department has been in its current location since 1973 and is cramped. Every space at the current fire department is used for storage or for parking its vehicles.

“Right now, we’re pretty antiqued,” Wide said. “This [new fire station] brings us up to the current level of what people expect from firefighters. It enhances our ability to train, equipment — just overall.”

This also will be a good project for the city, he added.

“If somebody’s driving through town, that’s where they look,” Wide said. “I do as a fireman anyway. You look at that and say ‘hey, a new fire station. This town has stuff going on. We may want to come back.’”

Once the new fire station is built, the city will remodel the old fire station to give the police department and city much-needed space, he added.
