Firefighters to hold dance Saturday

Feb 06, 2018

By David Hotle, The JOURNAL

For the second year, the Washington Fire Department is reviving a tradition years old and having an annual firemen’s dance at the Knights of Columbus Hall Saturday to assist with the purchase of equipment and training.

Firefighter Brendan DeLong said the dance begins at 7 p.m. and goes until 11 p.m. He said the dance started many years ago and he remembers attending it. The dance took a break about 10 years ago. He said a new dance committee was formed and the dance was restored last year.

‘We are going to have a live auction starting around 9 p.m.,” DeLong said. “There also will be a silent auction and a raffle. All the proceeds go to the fire department. There will be a DJ and some people dancing on the floor. It will be a good time.”

This makes the second major fundraiser the fire department holds during the year, with the first being the annual pancake dinner.

DeLong said last year the firefighters had determined it was a great time to bring back the dance. He said the response last year had been great, with over 200 people attending the event. DeLong said the department hopes to exceed those numbers this year. He also said the department had received a lot of positive feedback from people who attended.

“I think it is good that people come and support their local fire department,” DeLong said. “They put their lives on the line for the community and we appreciate any support we can get. it is also something fun to do when it is cold outside.”
