GUNNISON COUNTY, COLO. — The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed today that Washington resident Russ Zieglowsky, a former member of the Washington City Council, died in an accident Tuesday.

Gunnison County Sheriff Rick Besecker reported that an autopsy is being conducted. He believes the cause of death to be injuries sustained during a white-water rafting accident at about 2 p.m. Tuesday on the Taylor River.

“It is still being investigated,” Besecker said. “We have interviews to complete.”

He said no foul play was suspected in the incident.

He also said a press release would follow when the investigation is complete. The Washington Evening Journal will report more details as soon as they become available.

Zieglowsky served as the Ward 2 representative on the Washington City Council until resigning in August 2016 after moving out of the ward. He served just under 11 years on the council and was mayor pro tem when he resigned.
