Friday night preview

Sep 28, 2017

By John Butters, The JOURNAL

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks will host No.1 in 2A Williamsburg Friday night in Wellman.

The Hawks, 3-2, have struggled offensively after losing senior quarterback Karson Gingerich to a leg injury early in the season. Gingerich is still out and questionable for the rest of the season.

The Hawks earned a solid win against Camanche this past Friday night in a game that is best described as a defensive struggle.

The Hawks’ 26-8 victory wasn’t as easy as it appears; the last two touchdowns came late in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks have scored only 78 points all year and 42 of those points were gained on the ground.

The Hawks found some offensive spark in the air last week. Reserve quarterback Brad Tornow was 10 of 15 for 209 yards and a touchdown. But the offensive game is still dependent on running back Keaton Duwa. He led the Mid-Prairie ground game against Camanche with 32 carries for 219 yards and two touchdowns. For the year, Duwa has 554 rushing yards on 93 carries.

Mid-Prairie’s defense will get a good test against Willimasburg, said the Hawks’ head coach Pete Cavanagh.

“Williamsburg is one of the fastest teams I’ve seen on film. We have to be disciplined on defense and offense. We can’t give up big plays defensively, and we need to avoid turning the ball over on offense,” he said.

Williamsburg comes into Wellman with a 5-0 record.

WACO

WACO dominated in a 57-0 win over English Valleys at their homecoming Friday night. WACO is now 3-3 and English Valleys drops to 2-4. WACO travels to Lone Tree this Friday.

Sigourney-Keota

Sigourney-Keota defeated Van Buren 48-16 Friday night. Sigourney-Keota is now 2-3 and Van Buren drops to 1-4. The Cobras host Columbus Community for homecoming Friday.

Highland

Highland will play Van Buren, Keosaqua at home this week, in a homecoming matchup. Highland is 1 - 4 this year.

They lost to Regina 45 to 7 last week. Keosaqua is also 1-4 on the season.
