Fundraiser for VFW Friday

Jul 24, 2013

A fundraiser to assist Riverside VFW Post No. 6414 is wrapping up from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the VFW building with a steak feed catered by Jerry and Marge Catering. For every meal sold, Jerry and Marge Sweeting will donate $2 to the VFW Flood Relief effort. This spring the Riverside VFW suffered from three floods. During the flood in mid-April the water raised 38-inches high on the VFW’s main flood, the highest water that had ever flowed through the VFW. The river had also risen so quickly that volunteers were unable to get much of the equipment to a high enough spot to save it from damage. The kitchen needed to be gutted and paneling was removed. One restroom was completely taken apart. The VFW was closed for 12 days due to flooding, clean up and mold mitigation. The VFW has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the City of Riverside and has applied to the Washington County Riverboat Foundation for a $43,000 grant, for which it needs a $12,000 match. Anyo9ne wishing to donate to the fund can do so through a special account at People’s Trust and Savings Bank, Attention: VFW Flood Relief Fund, 90 East Railroad Street, P.O. Box A, Riverside, Ia. 52327.
