The Washington girls’ track team will kick off its season today with the Demon Relays being held at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

Twenty-nine teams will be there to compete, which help the girls to perform well.

“Everybody just wants a chance to run,” head coach Stephanie Tschantz said. “We are in our fourth week of practice and you can tell the girls are ready to start competing. It is still early, so I don’t have high expectations for tomorrow, just want to see where we are right now.”

There are a lot of returning runners who will compete this afternoon.

“Pretty much all our sophomores, juniors and seniors are returning from last year. We had five girls run at State last year,” Tschantz said.

Ashley Telleen ran the 400 hurdles and the 4x200, Isabel Bailey ran the 4x200, Jenah Greiner ran the 4x200, Leah Marek also ran 4x200 and Hannah Anderson ran 100,200 and did the long jump at state last year, she added. They all are returning to the team this year.

Anderson also placed fourth in the 100 at state last year and second in long jump and is looking strong for this year, Tschantz said.

“Our sprints will be our strength again this year,” Tschantz said. “Although we have several girls in field events, distance and hurdles that have been looking really good as well. I’m anxious to see how we look.”

Brooke Stout and Michaela Hoffman have also been great leaders at practice for the girls track team, she added.

“They lead the girls in warm-ups every day and really help encourage the younger girls,” Tschantz said.

Tschantz expects the season to go well for the Lady Demons.

“I know we have several determined girls with high goals, and I honestly think they can achieve them,” she said. “Several want to qualify for Drake and State and of course have PRs. They are all working extremely hard right now. It should be a fun season!”
