Goat and sheep weigh-ins held

May 08, 2018
Washington County 4-H alum Spencer Arnold assisted with collecting retinal images this year for goats nominated for the Iowa State Fair. Sydney Black, member of the Highlanders 4-H Club, has shown goats during her 4-H career and volunteered at weigh-in as well.

Washington County 4-H’ers and FFA members have had the official start of their market goat and sheep livestock projects with the spring weigh-ins. These start weights allow rate of gain to be figured at the county fair.

Market goats were weighed Thursday, May 3. Twenty-eight members weighed and tagged 54 goats. Nineteen goats were nominated for the Iowa State Fair through retinal scans.

Sheep were weighed Saturday, May 5. Forty members weighed in 190 lambs with 59 nominated for the Iowa State Fair.

4-H members w email notification to go into 4hOnline to verify all market weights by May 15. Any breeding animals will also need to be entered by the 4-H member into 4hOnline accounts by May 15. Staff at the Extension Office can assist with this if needed.

Thank you to 4-H goat and sheep superintendents, for their time retinal scanning and donation of equipment as well as to all the volunteers who assisted with the goat and sheep weigh-ins for the 2018 Washington County Fair.

For more information on the 4-H goat or sheep project area, or how to get involved with 4-H as a member or volunteer, please contact the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811.
