Halcyon House News

Jun 23, 2017

Halcyon House residents had a relaxing and fun day on the Coralville Lake, Tuesday, June 20. Halcyon House residents Gladys Ferguson, Marcella Reed, Wes and Carol Madsen, Betty Osincup, Maxine Davisson, Jane Leyden and many others ate a delicious picnic lunch prepared by the Applewood Bistro followed by a two-hour 0ontoon boat ride on the Coralville Lake. The residents enjoyed the beautiful weather, wildlife and the companionship of others!

Halcyon House and Lending Hands participated in the Longest Day, organized by Blissed out Movement, on Wednesday, June 21 in Central Park to show our love for all those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Community members and local businesses came together to show their support and to raise funds and awareness for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. Halcyon House team members, residents and volunteers demonstrated their line-dancing class along with a seated strength class. Lending Hands hosted a booth providing information regarding their services. The Applewood Bistro provided lunches with the goodwill donations going to the Alzheimer’s Association. Despite the rain, community members enjoyed exercise classes, workshops, live entertainment and vendors.

Mix & Mingle was hosted in the Applewood Bistro for Halcyon House residents. This event, held monthly, is a fun, informal way to meet new neighbors or catch up with old ones! Complimentary light appetizers are served with a variety of drinks for sale. The June event was attended by Wayne and Mathena Barta, Carolyn Levy, Isy Flander, Fred and Nan Stark, Wes and Carol Madsen, Mona Paul, Bill Chmelar, Alice Edgin, Virginia Tschantz, Alice George, Denny and Connie Sorrell, Becky Patterson, Jane Leyden, Erma Ropp, Dolores Wood, and Dean Slater.

Last Sunday, Betty Osincup and daughter, Elsye Chapman, met daughter, Donna Olson and husband, Bob and granddaughter, Regina Roselund at their North Liberty church. They all went to lunch together near the Coralville Performing Arts Center. Grandson, Ben Chapman, was in the City Circle Acting Company final matinee performance of “The Little Mermaid.” Ben played the part of an underwater song-and-dance green eel. Betty says it isn’t often she gets posted on Facebook as an underwater eel grandma!

Isy Flander recently celebrated her 85th birthday with her family. She went out to lunch and spent the afternoon with sons from Keota, Randy and wife Cindy and Murray; daughter, Mandy Holden of Manly. She received flowers and phone calls all day long wishing her a happy birthday.

Maxine Peiffer enjoyed a visit from daughter Linda recently. Linda was visiting from Ohio and spent 10 days in Iowa. Maxine and Linda enjoyed their time together looking through old photos and sharing stories. They also enjoyed supper together at Halcyon House.

Margret Steinbeck enjoyed a visit from her daughter, Kortney Graybill. Kortney traveled from Washington State and spent several days with her mother.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Bonny Bonnell, Rose Mary Worley, Darlene Flynn, Wilford Greiner, Ione Burham, and Don Gardner.

Halcyon House resident and team members extend our deepest sympathy to the families of our friends and residents: Ted Griffith and Allan Utech.
