Halcyon House News

Jul 14, 2017

Intern Lance Lewis, representing the Prairie Flower Church, led the weekly service with Halcyon House residents. The sermon was titled “A Heart of Peace.” The service included Scripture from Mathew 6:25-33.

WesleyLife Week our 70th Anniversary Celebration was continued on Monday, July 10, with the theme centered around “We profit from persons we did not know.” A block party was planned from 5 - 7 p.m. During the day, some of the residents joined the Activity Department and made cream cheese mints to be served at the Block Party. For the Block Party, the Washington County Cattlemen grilled hamburgers; the Applewood Bistro served a delicious buffet of potato and pasta salads, relishes and decorated watermelon with a selection of various fresh fruits. Dietary staff made a 70th Anniversary cake with the cream cheese mints. Many of the residents and neighbors to Halcyon House ate under tents and enjoyed the musical entertainment of Kaylie Horak (daughter of Halcyon Applewood Bistro’s team member and manager Sherri Horak). Two other Halcyon Team members Nicholas and Adam Todd along with Gary McCurdy played for a large crowd outside.

On Tuesday, July 11, the theme was “We drink from wells we did not dig.” Dietary staff centered the menu around a county fair theme. They adorned the dining tables with Mason Jars filled with corn and a colored “fair” picture. Residents enjoyed a lunch of hot beef sundaes (bread topped with beef and mashed potatoes for ice cream, gravy for syrup and a cherry tomato), corns dogs, funnel cake fries, and popcorn for a snack. In the households that day, Mary Jo Koehler sang and played the guitar for residents gathered in Rosewood. Linda Sturdevant brought items and greeting cards around to residents in Sagewood from the Emporium. That afternoon, Balloon Artist Wes Little from Tipton made the rounds and shared his talent with Lending Hands, then came to share with household residents in Rosewood and a large group of residents in the Timmins Dining Room. Residents were awarded with a balloon figurine of their choice. On Wednesday, July 12, using the theme of “We sit in the shade of trees we did not plant,” administration created a display of “Our Family Tree” with a collection of albums which featured remembrance of residents who have passed away. They provided refreshments of “tree” related treats of lemon, cherry and pecan bars. The Activity Department served Apple Orchard punch to all of the households throughout the day as well. That evening a large crowd gathered in Timmins Dining Room for a wonderful performance from Zion Christian Fellowship who are a Halcyon House favorite. They sang hymns and resident requests. Everyone socialized afterward and had refreshments.

On Thursday, July 13, residents enjoyed celebrating the theme of “We warm ourselves at fires we did not light.” by enjoying S’mores courtesy of the nursing department. A large group of residents gathered in Rosewood for Richard Colby’s “Classics Et Cetera” music program. Carol Mottet came to Wedgewood and played Dice with some of the residents. That afternoon, Al and Lorna Olson conducted a Bible dtudy to a group in Wedgewood.

To close up a fun-filled week of celebration on Friday, residents celebrated the theme “We are ever bound in relationships” by making mini cheesecakes in Rosewood. A large crowd gathered in Timmins Dining room for the closing ceremony which featured a slide show of photos illustrating the residents participating in numerous fun filled activities throughout the week and awards were presented to deserving team members and residents. Afterwards, Ned Francis sang, played the guitar and keyboard to wrap up the week.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Ruth Bonnell and Carolyn Kaufman!!

Team members and residents at Halcyon House extend our deepest sympathy to the family of our friend and resident Chick Lyle.
