Halcyon House News

Sep 08, 2017

Pastor Kwang Song representing the United Methodist Church provided the weekly service to Halcyon House residents this past Sunday. The sermon was titled “Lord’s Supper.” Scripture from Matthew 26:26-30 was shared with those in attendance.

Few pieces of exercise equipment enhance workouts for everyone from elite athletes to senior citizens to children to rehab patients, but a balance disc (also known as a wobble or wiggle cushion) is one of them. Halcyon House Wellness Department this past week incorporated the balance discs into the Seated Strength and Strength and Stability resident exercise classes. Balance discs are round, air-filled discs that are strong enough to sit, stand and exercise on. They’re commonly added to workouts to improve balance and increase core strength. Halcyon House residents equate standing on the balance discs to the feeling of standing on an uneven surface. Denny Sorrell, Connie Sorrell, Bill Chmelar, Dolores Wood, Erma Ropp and others practiced a Front Reach and Standing Abduction while standing on the discs during Strength and Stability class. Mary Ann Hennigan, Bonnie Applegate, Carolyn Levy and others during Seated Strength class sat on the discs while doing cardiovascular and strength exercises. Halcyon House Wellness Department is currently designing a new balance class that will be using the balance discs, ballet barre and other equipment to help improve balance, core strength and posture.

Residents gathered in the Marshall Gameroom for the Iowa Hawkeye football game last Saturday. They enjoyed cheering on the Hawks, food, and fellowship. Isy Flander, Mary Ann Hennigan, Alice Edgin, Bill Chmelar, Betty Quinn, Virginia Tschantz, Marilyn Mangold, and Betty Osincup enjoyed the game on the big screen TV.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Burdell Huisinga.
