Halcyon House News

Sep 29, 2017

Dan Drost representing the Reformed Presbyterian Church provided the weekly service to Halcyon House residents this past Sunday. The sermon was titled “The Purpose of Creation.” Scripture from Romans 8:11-22 was shared with those in attendance.

Last week Halcyon House residents worked on decorating their float for the Homecoming parade. Posters were made, orange and black napkins were stuffed into chicken wire, and streamers were hung. There were several Dolly Patron look-alikes on the float: Connie Sorrell, Becky Patterson, Gladys Ferguson, and Jane Leyden. Marcella Reed and Mary Ann Hennigan dressed as cowgirls and Bill Chmelar dressed as a cowboy. Willie Nelson’s role was played by Denny Sorrell with braids and all! A few participants from Lending Hands, including Cheryl Dill, rode on the float as well. The theme this year was “I Don’t Need Your Rockin’ Chair, Your Geritol or Your Medicare,” from the song made famous by George Jones. Megan Richardson’s son, Quintyn, rode in the back of the truck throwing out candy along with Heidi Wheeler, team member from Lending Hands. Greg Giardino drove the truck with Megan Richardson riding shotgun, and we owe them a big thank-you for arranging the hay wagon from Tim and Mary Greiner, providing the truck, and driving in the parade. Many thanks to Chris Carter for his overall help with the float, float theme, and music.

Active Aging Week at Halcyon House kicked off with a live performance by Duffy Hudson, comedian from Los Angles, California. Duffy performed stories, songs and lots of jokes as the famous George Burns. Millie Guy, Karen McCreedy, Ruth Bonnell, and lots of others residents thoroughly enjoyed Duffy’s routine.

Nine ladies had fun making their own cards with Lori Hammes of Stampin’ UP. Lori supplied all of the material and guidance as the class made four different cards. In attendance were: Loretta Gardner, Ann Britten, Sandy Weller, Greta Embree, Charlotte Pencil, Maggie Chestnut, Ruth Brock, Gladys Ferguson, and Diane Worley (taking the place of her mother, Rosemary Worley). We thank Lori for coming to Halcyon House to do the class, it was enjoyed immensely by all!

Karen McCreedy was privileged to attend a family reunion of her siblings and their families on Saturday. The event was held in her brother’s garage in Ankeny with all five siblings present. They are from Fort Myers, Florida; West Palm Beach, Florida; Coon Rapids; Ankeny; and Washington. Their children and grandchildren were in attendance from Coralville, Washington, Keota, Ames, West Des Moines, Newton, and Anamosa as well as Kansas city, Kansas; Chicago, Illinois; Rochester, New Mexico; Waseca, Minnesota; Minnetonka, Minnesota; and Farmington, New Mexico. A great time was enjoyed by those in attendance. Those unable to attend were from Michigan, Chicago, Des Moines, Pennsylvania, Florida, Maryland and Atlantic.

Betty Osincup’s daughter, Nancy Roselund, flew from her home at Canyon Country, California, to Iowa Tuesday. She will be enjoying activities with her high school classmates at their reunion this weekend. Nancy will be staying with Betty at Halcyon House on Friday and Saturday. She will also be with her sisters Donna Olson, Elyse Chapman and her daughter, Regina Roselund, as well as with Shiloh Church friends. Nancy plans to fly home on Monday.

Happy Birthday wishes go out this week to Margaret Steinbeck.
