Happenings in Washington

January 21, 2015
Washington, Iowa

To the Editor:

Two small happenings in Washington
An irritating happening first: My husband was driving on a snowy, icy street. As we came to an intersection, two walkers striding in unison came toward us from the driver’s side. They kept on walking and talking and stopped only when they were in touching distance of our side door. By that time, my husband was braking. We were able to stop and they walked on in front of our car. We think they knew they were going to stop in the middle of the street and wait for our car, but we sure didn’t.
A Good happening second: A couple of weeks ago, I was taking a few Christmas cards to the drive-up collection box in front of the Washington post office. I rolled down my car window, stopped, reached out and put them in the slot and drove off. I heard a vehicle honk behind me, so I looked in the rear view mirror. Another vehicle had pulled in to mail letters and everything looked OK. Then, the driver’s door opened and the driver got out and picked up something on the ground. I realized that at least one of my four cards didn’t make it down the slot. How thoughtful of that person to pick it up and mail it for me. I couldn’t stop because a car was coming behind me. I thank the good driver who did a good deed that day.
