Hero night will be held Friday

By David Hotle | Aug 24, 2017

For the fourth year, the Demon Nation is taking time to honor those who serve and whose daily job is to run into situations other people run away from.

During the game against Albia Friday evening, Washington High School will hold the fouth annual Hero Night - a time to show appreciation to veterans, active military, reserves, law enforcement, medical and rescue services, as well as other public servants who may be called on to go in harm’s way. The Demons will be wearing a special sticker on their helmets to honor the hometown heroes.

“Heroes Night is always a fun night,” football head coach Garrison Carter said. “We get the chance to celebrate two best things in the world: Demon football and America. This game serves as a tremendous reminder of how lucky we are to get to spend our Fridays at Case Field, under the light, thanks to all the efforts and sacrifices so many others make for us.’

The night comes during the first game of the season when the demons face off against Albia. The JV match starts at 5 p.m. at Case Field, while the varsity players take the field at 7:30 p.m.

A caravan containing the heroes will leave from Washington High School at 4:15 p.m. to travel to Case Field with the football team and a police escort. At 7;15 p.m. the participants will line up on the five yeard line to be recognized for their contributions to the United States.

Athletic director Brent Van Wheelden said hospitality tents would be set up for the heroes and reserved seating on the 50 yard line would be offered.

“It will be time to honor anyone or any family member on that night,” he said.

He also said the heroes would be allowed on the field prior to the game for warm up with the team.

People wishing to be recognized can just show up at the high school at about 4 p.m. or at the game, Van Wheelden said.

All questions and RSVP’s will be made to Kris Pierson at kpierson@washington.k12.ia.us.
