High-speed chase reaches 142 mph

By David Hotle | Jul 24, 2017

A Washington man was arrested Friday morning after leading Washington County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of 142 miles per hour.

Travis Cole Brown, 32, of Washington, is charged with driving under suspension, expired registration, reckless driving, speeding — 142 in a 55, and speeding 76 in a 55. Charges are pending lab results for OWI third offense, felony eluding, possession of a controlled substance — meth, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Washington County chief deputy Shawn Ellingson, Deputy Nathan Schmucker was on patrol and running radar in the 1400 block of Ginkgo Avenue in Wellman, when a black motorcycle allegedly driven by Brown passed traveling 76 mph, and the speed was increasing. Ellingson said Schmucker had tried to stop the motorcycle, which accelerated. Ellingson said the motorcycle was westbound on 170th Street when Schmucker radarred the motorcycle going 142 mph.

“The subject pulled into Brenneman Pork and the officer was able to apprehend him at that point,” Ellingson said.

Ellingson said there were two charges of speeding because the incidents occurred in two separate speed zones.
