IOWA CITY – The Highland High School girls’ varsity basketball team’s season came to an end on Friday, Feb. 21 at the hands of Regina by a score of 71 – 37 in a road district tournament game.
Regina led 15 – 6 after the first quarter and increased that lead with a 17 – 10 run in the second. The second half was more of the same as Regina’s offense poured on 39 points compared to the Huskies’ 21 to take the game.
“We never matched their intensity that they came out with,” Highland head coach Jody Fink said, “We got shooting opportunites but allowed them to disrupt these opportunities often. They got out and ran and we never got back on defense. A little over half of their scoring came in transition. We did shoot well at the free-throw line. It was a good season. Tonight just wasn’t the way we saw it ending. We take nothing away from Regina. They deserved this win.”
Sophomore Cheyanne Adamson and freshman Kelsey Hora each had 11 points to lead Highland. Junior Chelsey Lampe had nine points and four rebounds. Senior Jordan Rath had two points and two blocked shots.
Junior Bridget Murphy had three steals. Lampe also had five assists. Lampe and junior Samantha Dutton each had two blocked shots. The Huskies finish the season at 15 – 9.
