Highland wins four games at the Jack North Classic

WATERLOO — For the first time since Highland began competing at the Jack North Softball Classic in Waterloo, the Huskies won all four of their games.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Springer threw a three-hit shutout to lift the sixth-ranked Huskies to a 6-0 win over Aplington-Parkersburg on Friday. Springer struck out three Falcons and did not issue a walk.

The game was scoreless until Highland broke through with four runs in the fourth inning. The Huskies added runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Sophomore Bridget Murphy went 4-for-4, stole three bases and drove in a run for Highland. Sophomore Bailey Walsh had a hit and two RBIs, and senior Paige Wieland and sophomore Courtnee Hahn both had a hit and an RBI. Sophomore Morgan Craig had a double, while junior Jordan Rath, freshman Cheyann Adamson and eighth-grader Kelsey Hora each chipped in a hit.

Highland scored a run in the seventh inning to edge Don Bosco, the top-ranked team in Class 1A, 6-5 on Friday.

The Huskies trailed the Dons (11-4) 4-0 before rallying.

Rath had a double and drove in three runs for Highland, and Walsh had a hit and two RBIs. Wieland went 2-for3 at the plate, while Murphy, Craig, Adamson and senior Kassie Vazquez each added a hit.

Springer recorded 11 strikeouts as she picked up the win. She gave up five runs on six hits in seven innings.

A big seven-run ninth inning lifted Highland to a 14-8 win over Marion on Saturday. The Huskies scored a run in the top of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, but the Indians (7-12) tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Both teams scored a run in the eighth, but then Highland erupted for seven runs in the top of the ninth.

Hahn went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs, and Vazquez was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Adamson went 3-for-3 and scored twice, and Craig was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Walsh went 2-for-3 and drove in a run, and Wieland had two hits and an RBI. Hora had a hit and two RBIs, and Murphy drove in a run. Rath also had a hit for Highland, which tallied 17 hits in the game.

Sophomore Katie Chalupa got the win for Highland. She gave up eight runs on seven hits in eight innings.

Highland finished off the weekend with a 6-2 win over Waterloo East on Saturday. The Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the Trojans (8-12) after two innings and never looked back.

Murphy went 3-for-4 and drove in a run for the Huskies, and Adamson was 2-for-3 with a double. Vazquez went 2-for-4 with a triple, while Hahn and Craig both had a hit and an RBI. Chalupa and Rath both chipped in hits, and junior Katie Hora drove in a run.

Springer gave up two runs on five hits as she picked up the win. She struck out four batters and walked three.

The Huskies (19-2) take a seven-game winning streak into tonight’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division game at WACO.
