KEOTA — The IMS baseball team moved one step closer to playing in the state tournament Tuesday, July 11, as they easily won over Tri-County 14-0 in 4 1/2 innings of play.

The night started off big for IMS as Drake Brezina hit a sacrifice fly to center field bringing in Cole Ours for the first run. After the bases were loaded, Cole Yoder hit a pop fly to center field bringing in both Nick Yutzy and Reggie Borntrager, to put IMS up 3-0.

Noah Bruns hit a sacrifice to right field to bring in Blake Bontrager, giving IMS a 4-0 lead, and only their second out. Caleb Yoder hit a drive down the left field line to bring in Cole Yoder, adding to IMS’ lead.

Trevor Leyden took his turn at bat and because of a Tri-County fielding error, Caleb Yoder scored the sixth run for IMS. Ours hit a bouncer to right field to bring in Leyden. Brezina hit a home run about 350 feet over the center field fence to clear the bases and give IMS a 9-0 lead after one inning.

Neither team scored in the second inning and Tri-County left two stranded in the top of the third.

IMS kicked off the scoring in the third inning when Ours hit a grounder to left field to bring in Leyden. Brezina repeated his last appearance at the plate by hitting another home run over the fence at left-center field to bring in Ours from first base, giving IMS a 12-0 lead.

Brezina says hitting two home runs in the game was a different feeling.

“Once you do it once, it’s easier to do it the next time,” he says. “It’s good to know it’s possible. It felt good.”

The final scoring for IMS came when Cole Yoder hit a homerun in left field bringing in Bontrager and putting the score at 14-0. IMS held Tri-County to only allowing two to get on base in the fifth, securing their victory.

Coach Danny Hershberger loved how the game went.

“We, as a team, talked about wanting to come out early and put some pressure on their team and we were able to do that. It’s always helpful for your pitching and defense to put runs on the board right away.

“When you put nine on the board that really gives us momentum and we were able to carry that throughout the night. I thought it was a great job of our team being ready to go, right from the start.”

He loves how Brezina’s homeruns lifted the team’s spirits.

“It’s a huge momentum and confidence boost watching him to that. It was a great performance from him. It’s nothing like being able to come through like that in a postseason game. It was a great job by Drake leading the team and everyone else followed suit.”

The boys will be returning to the Keota field Thursday, July 13, to face BGM, and Hershberger hopes being familiar with the field will help them.

“Knowing the surroundings will always help in being more comfortable with the field. It’s a nice field to play on and it’s a good place to play districts. I think we’ll be ready to go.”

As for facing BGM, Brezina says it’s going to be a challenge.

“We have to be ready for anything,” Brezina says. “We have to play them like they are the best ones in the state.

“That’s our mind-set coming into this. It’s a big time of the year and hopefully we can get a win.”
