IMS girls down Highland in Southeast Iowa Super Conference game

By Derek Helling | Jan 16, 2014

It was a tale of four quarters in the girls’ basketball game between Highland High School and the Iowa Mennonite School on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
“We won the first and third quarters; they took the second and fourth,” explained Highland head coach Jody Fink.
IMS used those second and fourth quarter pushes to take the 40-37 victory over Highland in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference game at IMS.
The Huskies got out to an 11 - 7 lead after the first eight minutes of play, then suffered a reversal of fortunes as IMS topped Highland 12 - 7 in the second quarter to make the score 19 - 18 at the half with the Huskies trailing by one.
“A totally different team started this game than in the past couple of nights,” Fink commented.
Whatever Fink said to his team at halftime must have worked, as Highland came out and took the lead back in a third quarter that was characterized by defense, outscoring IMS 9-5 in the period. The contest went into the final eight minutes with little separation between the two squads.
IMS went on a 16-10 run to overcome the Huskies during the fourth quarter and claim the victory.
“They [IMS] wanted it more than we did and it showed in the hustle. We looked like we were in slow motion and stuck in cement. We had our chances but couldn’t execute. This is a good one to put behind us and move on,” Fink added.
Neither team shot a high percentage from the field, as Highland’s 36 percent barely edged IMS’ 33 percent. The team rebounds were even at 29.
Junior Chelsey Lampe led Highland in scoring with 14 points on 6/15 shooting from the field. Four players tied for the team lead in rebounds with six. Sophomore Cheyann Anderson led the team in steals with four. Anderson and Lampe tied for the team lead in assists with three each.
For IMS, senior Olivia Yutzy led the way with 17 points, shooting 50 percent from the field. Yutzy and junior Riley Schmeider tied for the team lead in rebounds with five each. Three IMS players recorded three assists. Yutzy and junior Cassidy Bontrager each had three steals to set the pace and Schmeider blocked a shot.
Highland will be on the court again on Friday, Jan. 17 at Columbus Community. IMS will play at home against West Burlington on Thursday, Jan. 16.
