IMS soccer wins final game of season

By Bill Gatchel | May 19, 2017

IMS fought to a 2-1 victory over a physical Mount Vernon team to finish the regular season with a 12-3 record in Mount Vernon Thursday, May 18.

The game began with a slight wind at the backs of IMS who pushed forward trying to find a way to score.

The back line anchored by Cole Yoder, Reggie Borntrager, along with Mitch Schmieder, Juan Andino and Jacob Boller limited Mount Vernon’s chances and allowed the rest of the team to push forward.

The first goal came after Isaiah Swantz sent a ball to the back post where Nick Yutzy was waiting to head the ball into the net.

Before Yutzy could get to the ball he was pulled down in the box earning a penalty kick for IMS.

Isaiah Swantz took the penalty kick and blasted it by the goalie for the lead.

Three minutes later Yutzy was again involved in the scoring as he took a pass from Gerardo Mendoza and turned it into the corner of the net for the 2-0 lead with fifteen minutes left in the half.

Not giving up, Mount Vernon scored with 9 minutes left in the half after a scrum in the penalty box.

The IMS back line again reasserted itself and shut down the Mount Vernon attack the rest of the half.

In the second half IMS was going into a slight breeze but it didn’t seem to affect IMS’ play as Anthony Villatoro, Cole Ours, Seth Danga and Louis Etienne put pressure on the goal.

Villatoro had a glorious free kick which sailed just over the crossbar. IMS earned a second penalty kick about 20 minutes into the half but the Mount Vernon goalie made the save, to maintain the 2-1 score.

As time ticked off the clock Mount Vernon attempted to push forward but IMS was able to respond, creating some scoring chances to finish off the game and preserve the victory.

IMS begins district play Monday, May 22, traveling to Pella Christian to play Chariton at 5 p.m.
