KALONA — A tenth grade student at Iowa Mennonite School eportedly died due to a fall at an all-school social Friday evening, according to a news release from the school.

According tot he release from principal Steve Schrag, student Teresa Cardenas died after emergency crews worked to revive her after the fall, but were unable to. Schrag said in the release that this is a devastating loss for Teresa’s family and for the community.

“Please pray for Teresa’s mother Mireya, brothers Carlos and Michael and father Carlos,” Schrag wrote. “Please also hold the Torre Fuerte congregation, the First Mennonite/Torre Fuerte MYF, and the IMS community in prayer as school resumes on Monday. May Christ’s peace that passes understanding guard all our hearts and minds in this time of immense grief.”

On the school’s social media site, hundreds of people posted their prayers for the family and for the IMS community after the tragedy.

The release said that the IMS community gathered Saturday morning with pastors and counselors available. It also said that IMS has sought additional resources from both private counselors as well as the Critical Incident Stress Management Team from the local area education agency.

IMS classes began two hours late Monday. The students began the day by gathering in the library for a time of togetherness. Classes throughout the day were modified and the school worked to have multiple adults in the classrooms and the Grant Wood AEA team was available.

Visitation for Cardenas will take place at IMS from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Celebration Hall at IMS. Burial will follow at Lower Deer Creek Cemetery. A general memorial fund has been established and Beatty-Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona is assisting with the arrangements.

IMS will be closed Wednesday so students who choose to attend the service may do so.

“We are still working upon the student schedule for Tuesday as we continue to process and make arrangements,” a release said.
