Iowa State tabbed 9th in Big 12 football race

Cyclones picked to finish ahead of only Kansas

AMES — The Iowa State football team was picked to finish ninth in the Big 12 preseason media poll, the league announced Thursday.

The Cyclones, who finished 3-9 last season with two conference wins in Coach Matt Campbell’s first year, were selected ahead of Kansas.

Texas Tech edged Iowa State for eighth in the poll.

Oklahoma, which has won the last two Big 12 titles, was picked to win the league with 19 first-place votes in Coach Lincoln Riley’s first season.

Oklahoma State was picked second with 12 first-place votes and Kansas State was third with one first-place vote.

Iowa State had two seniors, wide receiver Allen Lazard and safety Kamari Cotton-Moya, named to the media’s all-Big 12 team Wednesday.

The Cyclones open their season at home against Northern Iowa Sept. 2 (7 p.m.).
