James Keith "Red" Carruthers, 77, of Brighton died Wednesday January 17, 2018, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington.


He was born December 13, 1940, in Keosauqua, the son of Fred William and Ina Pearl Harness Carruthers. He graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1960 and married Carol Gullick in Ft. Madison November 30, 1963. He worked at Fansteel in Washington until he retired in 2002. Red had been a member of Naaman Lodge No. 613, A.F. & A.M. in Brighton.


Red is survived by his wife, Carol of Brighton; one daughter, Kelly Chalupa (Andy), of Ankeny; two grandchildren; three sisters: Freda Thornton (Deane), of Middletown, Francis Sells, of Monmouth, Ill. and Dorothea Russell, of Abilene, Texas; and one brother, Don Carruthers (Rhonda), of Keosauqua. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Evelyn McCracken and Arlene Shannon; and two brothers: Howard and Jack Carruthers.


Visitation with the family will be Monday, January 22, 2018 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton. Memorials are directed to Brighton First Responders or Brighton Fire Department and may be mailed to the family at 501 East Main St., Brighton, IA 52540. No services are planned.
