James R. Marek, 63, of Kalona, died Wednesday, April 26, 2017, in the Washington County Hospital and Clinics.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond with The Rev. David Brownfield officiating. The body will be cremated following the mass. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for his granddaughter’s education.

Mr. Marek was born April 24, 1954, the son of Robert and Mary (Ruth) Marek. He graduated from Washington High School in 1972. He married Mary Zahs on Nov. 27, 1982, in Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond.

He farmed and, for many years, owned and operated Marek Trucking. He enjoyed farming, working with his cattle and driving his gator with his dog, Tucker. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and babysitting his granddaughters.

Surviving are his wife; son, Cody Marek and wife Tammy; two granddaughters; three sisters, Patricia Greubel of Knoxville, Francine McVeigh and husband Roger of Unionville, and Sherry Chary and husband Sudharshan of Florida; two brothers, Gerald Marek and wife Younglim of Chicago, Illinois; and Wayne Marek and wife Amy of Ankeny; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; a brother-in-law, Robert Zahs and wife Marta of Iowa City; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Zahs of Riverside.

He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Joseph in infancy; a nephew and his wife; and his in-laws, George and Gladys Zahs.
