Kalona Elementary starts 'Pick a Better Snack'

Photo by: Washington County Extension Students learned at Pick a Better Snack that 60 minutes of exercise is required each day for healthy bodies. Melissa Stumpf’s first grade students at Kalona Elementary put in a little exercise time in the classroom by dancing the Interlude.

First- and second-graders at Kalona Elementary School have started taking a few more healthy bites these past two weeks through the "Pick a Better Snack" program.

This program is designed to motivate children to eat more fruits and vegetables in meals and snacks and to be more physically active. Each week Amy Green, 4-H/youth coordinator, visits the first- and second-grade classrooms to talk about healthy snacks, making healthy choices and they always get to sample a particular fruit or vegetable of the day.

Each week the students are reminded to be brave and try new things – including healthy fruits and vegetables. Green visited on Halloween with a special healthy Halloween snack. They learned about the variety of ways to buy and prepare carrots. Then they cooked up some jack-o'-lanterns using whole wheat bagels, light cream cheese, shredded carrots and raisins.

If you have any questions about the Pick a Better Snack program or would like to volunteer or financially support the program, please call the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811.
