KEOTA — While most school districts have homecoming week in the fall as part of a celebration during a district’s football season, in Keota, homecoming week is celebrated in the winter and honors the school’s basketball season.

With Keota School District sharing its football program with Sigourney School District, the school decided to honor its basketball program to give the chance for the community to come together and cheer on Keota students. The celebratory week kicked off Tuesday with students voting on who would be the homecoming king and queen. The winners will be announced during a pep rally Friday in the Keota High School gym.

Homecoming king candidates are Luke Greiner, Cole Brenneman, Hunter Wilson, and Riley Conrad. Homecoming queen candidates are Thedieanna Ackerman, Grace McHugh, Olivia Sieren, and Kylie Beinhart.

On Thursday, the school will have a student activities event, called Anything Goes Contest, where the students will play games and participate in events. Some games include dodgeball, tug-of-war and balloon bursting. It will begin at 1:10 p.m. in the high school gym.

At 1:55 p.m. Friday the school will hold its pep rally, and recognize the No. 1 Eagle fan and past courts. The homecoming king and queen will also be named. That is also open to the public. At 6 p.m. the Keota Eagles will take on the Iowa Valley Tigers in the Keota gym. A homecoming dance will immediately follow the game in the junior high gym, running until midnight.

Each day this week will also feature a dress-up day for the students. Wednesday will be “Multiplicity (look alike) Day.” Thursday is “Senior Citizen Day.” Friday is “Eagle Spirit Day.”
