Keota Fun Days begins Thursday

A display of the items that will be auctioned during Fun Days to benefit the VFW Post 4716 is on display at Farmers Savings Bank in Keota. Items range from handmade items to antiques to modern items. Proceeds will be used for a new veterans memorial.

KEOTA — People who buy items at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4716 auction Saturday will see the money again in the form of a new black marble memorial to military personnel from the Keota area who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
The idea of a new memorial for the town came to VFW member Larry Sanders several years ago as he looked at a photo of a former war memorial that stood in Keota until the 1960s. He said that the memorial had been made of wood and had to be removed. For years he had thought of restoring the memorial, only updated with the names of all the Keota natives who had lost their lives in the service. While the former memorial listed 500 names of World War II veterans, Sanders said that he has about 1,800 names that will emblazon the new memorial. The new memorial will hold names from the Civil War to the present and have plenty of room for future names.
In an effort to raise funds for the $150,000 memorial, the VFW will hold an auction during Keota Fun Days this Saturday. On the auction block are many items that were donated to aid the building of the memorial. He said about $35,000 has already been raised for the memorial.
“We’ve had a lot of things donated locally and some from 40, 60 or 100 miles away,” Sanders said. “The support has been terrific and really gratifying.”
The auction will take place after the grand parade at Lyle Insurance. A display has been set up at Farmers Savings bank of the items that had been donated for the auction.
The former memorial was set up on Broadway Avenue in downtown Keota. Over 2,000 people attended the dedication. Sanders said that the new memorial will be constructed on the west end of town on Main Street close to the Catholic Church.  He hopes to have the memorial done within a year.
