Kidzfest is Friday

By David Hotle | May 06, 2014
An obstacle course will be featured at Kidzfest again this year, along with many new attractions and returning favorites.

Young people or just the young at heart are all invited to participate in the Washington County Hospital and Clinics’ Kidzfest 2014, which will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in Central Park.
Hospital health promotions coordinator April Cuddeback said that Kidzfest is the annual health fair for the youth of the county. She said that the staff at the hospital had picked up the prizes for the event on Monday. In the hallway outside of Cuddeback’s office, several tote boxes full to overflowing with boxes sat waiting to be taken to the event. She said that when the prizes were selected, it was ensured that there were no electronic prizes or anything that would keep kids sedentary. She said they were all things to keep kids moving.
“We’ve moved it up this year to accommodate dance studios and staying away from Memorial Day,” Cuddeback said. “We have about 35 booths downtown with everything from live farm animal petting zoos to bounce houses and pedal pull contests.”
She said that this year there will be several new events, including a hog-calling contest and farm animal displays. The theme this year is “Down on the Farm: Growing Healthy Kids.” The hospital booth is going to be set up by the Central Park bandshell this year and will include a photo booth. Entertainment will be included on the bandshell beginning at 4:30 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. The pedal pull contest will be at 5:30 p.m. Prize drawings will be held all through the night.
Also this year, Cuddeback said, there will be a best-decorated booth contest, with a trophy being awarded to the top winner.
“The park will be full,” Cuddeback said. “We have maps of the event that will be at all the entrances and on the back of our bingo cards. We don’t have any spots left now. We are totally full.”
Cuddeback is unsure of how many years the event has been going on. She said that it has been held for at least 10 years. She said the event was formed because the hospital wanted to give something to the community that would give the community a way to learn more about health and wellness while having fun.
“It is a fun-filled family evening,” she said. “It is a fun way to see what things are offered and visit all the booths. There are plenty of activities for the kids and it is going to be a fun night.”
Also this year, Kidzfest will be the kickoff for National Hospital Week. She said that a week of activities has been planned for the staff.
In case of rain, the booths will move inside the library and the activities will be moved to the Washington Community Y.
Again this year, the square won’t be blocked off for the event until noon Friday. One lane of traffic will go around the square. Cars are asked to be removed from the lanes by noon so vendors can begin to set up.
