This year Washington young people will learn to avoid the yellow flag as they attend the 2018 running of Washington County Hospital and Clinics’ Kidzfest to see some racing cars, meet the drivers and learn about good health.

Starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, Central Park will be filled to capacity with plenty of fun and games for children of all ages, as well as a strong message on how to stay healthy. April Cuddeback, hospital health promotions coordinator, said that this year’s theme will be “Race to Health” and she said in addition to the normal food, booths and games offered at the event, racecar drivers and their cars will attend the event. She said kids who win a riding contest being held at the event will go for a ride in the “General Lee,” a replica of the a 1969 Dodge Charger driven in the television series The Dukes of Hazzard by Duke boys Bo and Luke.

“We are going to have big wheel races on the streets which will be fun,” Cuddeback said. “We are going to have bounce houses and the firemen are doing their obstacle course again this year. There will be lots of fun things.”

Having recently changed offices, Cuddeback does not have enough space to hold all the gifts and door prizes that will be given at the event. On the other side of the hospital, the prizes take up about half of a storage room. She said about 33 vendors — area businesses and organizations that provide health services to young people — will have games set up. The Washington County Sheriff’s office will discuss bicycle safety. The hospital will discuss car seat safety. Several food booths also will be featured at the event.

The groups also will be available in their booths to speak with young people and to help with other activities. Also available will be pony rides and firetrucks. Bounce houses and concessions are a standard part of the fest.

She said that Kidzfest is the annual community health fair for the children of Washington County. Kidzfest has run for well over 10 years. She said the event was formed because the hospital wanted to give something to the community that would give the community a way to learn more about health and wellness while having fun. Invitations have also been sent to children from all the surrounding school districts.

“It is going to be a great night,” Cuddeback said. “There are going to be a lot of fun family activities and great weather. It is a great time to enjoy Central Park and learn about services in Washington.”

Events will continue to 7:30 p.m.in the park. She said the weather forecast for the event is for a warm, sunny day.
