Latino Day scheduled for Sunday in Washington

Jun 01, 2018

By David Hotle, The JOURNAL

Organizer Jackie Amagon said that the hope is that Latino Day, the traditional cap of the Summer Classic event, will be inviting to all and to that end, she said the entire event would be bilingual this year.

Amagon said that she and Mayor Jaron Rosien will be co-hosts of the fourth running of the event. Amagon promises plenty of food and entertainment for the event that will take over Central Park. There will be eight vendors in the area and the event will begin with a bilingual Mass. She said that entertainers will come from all over the area to perform.

“We want to make it a community event, not just the Latino community,” Amagon said. “We want to make it more for the Washington community to come down and enjoy the food and the different events that we are going to have.”

Amagon also said that outgoing Washington Public Library Director Debbie Stanton would be honored at the event for her efforts to aid the Latino community in Washington. She said Latinos For Washington has had many events at the library and that the library has been very welcoming. Latinos for Washington scholarship recipients also will be recognized.

Latinos for Washington will have a booth and will present examples of the ongoing programs the organization offers in the community, including the citizenship workshops. She also said Mexican counsel would be returning to Washington soon to present services available for Mexican citizens.
