Learn about two Dutch gardens

Oct 19, 2017

Enjoy the beauty and wonder of two of Amsterdam’s Dutch gardens right here at home. The public is invited to attend a free program on the Dutch Gardens - Keukenhof and Horticus Botanicus. The program will be presented by Diane DeBok on Oct. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Washington County Extension Office.

DeBok, a Washington County Master Gardener, visited both of these gardens in 2016. The Keukenhof garden goes back to the 15th century and contains 9 miles of walking paths. It is more of a formal English style garden with a special emphsis on flower bulbs. With seven million flower bulbs planted every year across 79 acres, Keukenhof Gardens is a colorful sea of 800 varieties of tulips and other spring flowers, attracting visitors from around the world.

The Hortus Botanicus is located in the heart of Amsterdam and is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. According to DeBok, the garden was originally established in 1682 as an herb garden with medical plants to help combat a plague epidemic. Today it is an attractive botanical garden with more than 6,000 different plants.

The program is open to the public and is being hosted by the Washington County Master Gardeners. For more information on the program or the Washington County Master Gardners please contact the Extension Office at 319-653-4811.
