KALONA – Leroy Vernon Ropp, 92, of Kalona died Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at his home at Country View in North Liberty.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 24, at West Union Mennonite Church in rural Parnell with the Rev. Firman Gingerich officiating. Burial will be in the West Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., Friday at the Yoder Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, with the family present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Care Initiatives Hospice and Bickford of Iowa City.

Mr. Ropp was born July 10, 1924, in rural Kalona, the son of Solomon C. and Vesta Ropp. He married Edith Gnagey on June 3, 1947.

He attended school at Kalona and Cosgrove. He served a year in CPS in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Akron, Pennsylvania, working as a kitchen chef. He farmed the homestead where his wife grew up in rural Johnson County, and also did carpentry work and sold Pacemaker Pole Buildings. In 1996, the couple retired to a new home in Kalona and enjoyed more time traveling, playing games, and spending their winters in Pharr, Texas, with many friends.

Surviving are two daughters, Ardith Hartzler of Wellman, and Diana Miller and husband Morris of Riverside; one son, Lamont Ropp and wife Luetta of Wellman; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two step-grandsons; close family friends; and five siblings, Emil Ropp and wife Erma, Cora Miller and husband Levi, Morris Ropp and wife Norma, Paul Ropp and wife Marlene, and Norma Nisly and husband Harley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edith, in 2015; one son, Glenn Merlin Ropp; one daughter, Shirleen Ropp; one son-in-law, Turner Brown; and five siblings, Herman, John, and Wesley Ropp, Anna Mae Miller, and Cleora Yoder.
