Letters to the Journal

Sep 19, 2017

To the Editor:

If you haven’t read Sunday’s Des Moines Register’s editorial, go to the Washington Free Public Library and read it. “Empty Calories Can Help Replenish the State’s Budget.” The article is about the rise of obesity in our population and our consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and sodas.

I have felt for some time that a good solution to our budget shortfall would be to tax (yes, a tax) of, say, 10 cents on every energy drink, soda, and bottle of water. If there is a tax on those items now, increase it. I think it would also be appropriate to add at least 20 cents’ additional tax to every bottle, can or container of anything containing alcohol.

Use the new funds for education, community mental health centers and additional highway patrolmen. These areas have all been underfunded.

It seems to me that this should take our Legislature about 20 minutes to get this passed, but maybe I’m dreaming.

Jim Gorham
