Log Cabin Questers

Apr 24, 2013

Ten members of the Log Cabin Questers met at the Washington Public Library’s Genealogy Department. Marge Lasek led a tour of the facility. The Genealogy Department contains information on pioneer families, military history spanning from the Revolutionary War to World War II, immigration records, and will and probate books. Although most data and information concerns Washington County, there is a section that houses genealogical reference books for other states. Many of these books were originally stored in the county courthouse. Washington County record books include information on cemeteries and towns that are no longer in existence. Records of births, marriages and deaths are also stored. However, Iowa did not register births or deaths before the 1880s. The tour was very educational and the group thoroughly enjoyed it.

The business meeting followed. President Sheila Gerot opened the meeting. Thanks was given to Sharon Hahn for organizing the program and Martha Hahn for being the hostess. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report was given. The nominating committee presented its recommendations of Norma Stutzman as treasurer and Karen Lyons as vice president. Candidates were approved and will take office in September. Five members will attend State Day on Saturday, April 13, and three members will attend the Friday evening reception. The roll call was the oldest book the members owned. Refreshments were enjoyed.

The next meeting will be on May 3 with a tour of Kalona.
