Lyola was born on December 21, 1926 to August and Anna (Striegel) Peiffer in Keokuk County, Iowa. She was raised on the family farm near Sigourney and was educated at the rural Catholic schools. Lyola rode her blind horse named Billy five miles to school each day. Following her school education, she worked for families in the Sigourney area caring for their young children, cooking, baking, and cleaning homes. Lyola met Ardell Kaska at a dance in Keota, Iowa and they were united in marriage on April 20, 1949 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek, Iowa. Lyola and Ardell started their legacy together in Dublin, Iowa and moved to the “home place” in rural Fairfield in 1957. They farmed and raised 10 children together. Lyola was a homemaker and an avid gardener. She took pride in her family and enjoyed family gatherings; making many family favorites of homemade rolls, noodles, pies, apple dumplings, doughnuts and the list goes on and on.
