A man who was being held in the Washington County Jail on theft charges has been charged with Murder in the First Degree in connection with the murder of an Iowa City cabdriver.

On Wednesday, the Iowa City Police Department issued a warrant for Curtis Cortez Jones, charging him with the murder of cabdriver Ricky Lillie on June 27. Jones will be transported to the Johnson County Jail in Iowa City for a formal arraignment on the charge at a later date.

He is being held in Washington County in connection with theft charges issued by the Keota Police Department and a parole violation from the Eighth Judicial District of Iowa. If convicted of Murder in the First Degree, a Class A felony, Jones could be sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to Iowa City Police officials, Jones was identified entering Lillie’s cab and taking a cab ride to the 500 block of Ernest Street in Iowa City on or about June 27. The police allege Jones shot Lillie in the head. Jones was observed on surveillance video leaving the location.

The investigation is ongoing by the Iowa City Police Department investigations unit.
