AINSWORTH — This year’s visitors to the annual Marr Park Halloween Hike will have the chance to discover the wide range of parental care strategies in wildlife, with this year’s theme being “Babes in the Woods.”

Washington County naturalist Pam Holz said hikers will observe things related to the care of offspring in the wild.

The trail begins at the lodge between the two ponds and will travel along a luminary-lit trail.

Trail guides with flashlights will also be on the route. She said there would be about three challenges for people to face in the at-your-own-pace event that will show how parents in nature ensure their young survive to adulthood. Hikers will role play the part of hatchling turtles crawling toward the safety of water. They will also realize the high demand of parenthood by “feeding” a nest full of “baby chicks.” The hikers will also learn about the advantages of raising young in large groups.

After the hike, the Conservation Education Center will be open for more fun activities, including crafts and refreshments.

The trail can be entered any time between 6:45 and 8 p.m. Activities in the center will run through 8:30 p.m. All ages are welcome. In case of rain, indoor activities will be held, including some modified versions of the outdoor events. For more information call the Conservation Center at 319-657-2400.
