A former Riverside man pleaded guilty Thursday in Washington County Court to involuntary manslaughter and two counts of child endangerment that resulted in the death of his 17-month-old daughter.

Anthony Lamont McCoy, 36, of Wellman, will be sentenced on Aug. 3 for his role in the death of Avery McCoy, who was found dead in her crib on Nov. 9, 2016, in an apartment in Riverside the couple was renting at the time of the death. Avery’s mother, Ambrashia Marie Chrzan, 29, of Wellman, was convicted of child endangerment on May 18 and is scheduled to be sentenced on July 27. Chrzan could face up to 50 years in prison. The two were arrested in October 2017 after an investigation into the death.

In an earlier interview, Washington County Attorney John Gish confirmed that McCoy’s death occurred at a house her family was renting in Riverside. He had reported the medical examiner had ruled the death a homicide and declined further comment.

Medical Examiner Paul Towner had later confirmed the findings of the autopsy were that Avery McCoy was malnourished at the time of her death and she weighed 11 pounds. The exact cause of death was undetermined.

Avery McCoy was born May 31, 2015, in Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, the daughter of Anthony McCoy and Ambrashia Chrzan.

The couple reportedly have 11 children, and one other child who died at an earlier date

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Attorney’s Office, Iowa Attorney General’s Office and Iowa Medical Examiner’s Office jointly conducted the investigation into the death.
