Mid-Prairie baseball team wins first round of postseason over the weekend

The first area baseball postseason game was held Saturday, July 8, as Mid-Prairie was host to Columbus, which ended in a big win for the Golden Hawks.

Mid-Prairie scored five runs in the first inning to get an early lead in the game.

The big inning came in the second when they scored a total of 13 runs securing their victory.

The Golden Hawks’ Derek Rich, Keaton Duwa, Jared Miller, Jacob Leonard and Ryan Miller each scored three runs in the game.

Karson Gingerich had two runs while Stephen Miller had one run.

The Mid-Prairie pitching kept it close as Brad Tornow pitched two innings for Mid-Prairie giving up just two hits while striking out four.

Leonard struck out three during his one inning on the mound and Ashton Bush pitched one inning allowing just one hit and one walk.

For Columbus, the lone walk was given to Evan Rees. Stealing a base in the game from Columbus was Tucker Morrison.

Taking the loss for Columbus as pitcher was Eric Reese who had two innings on the mound, giving up all 18 runs on 15 hits while walking three and striking out two.

Relief pitcher Rees walked one and struck out one during his one inning of pitching.

Columbus ends their season with a 1-19 record while Mid-Prairie improves to 15-14.

They will face West Burlington at Iowa City Regina Tuesday, July 11, starting at 5 p.m. The winner will play against either Regina or Van Buren Saturday, July 15, at Regina, for the Class 2A District 10 title.
