Mid-Prairie blows out West Liberty in home opener

Apr 09, 2013

WELLMAN — No. 14 Mid-Prairie won its home opener on Monday night, blanking visiting West Liberty 10-0.

The Golden Hawks (1-1) jumped out to a quick lead when sophomore Alison Riggan scored with less than a minute gone in the contest on an assist from senior Meghan Redlinger.

Redlinger scored the next goal of the match, the first of three on the night for the senior. Riggan scored a pair of goals in the contest, and team captain Taylor Hershberger scored the first two varsity goals of her career. Sophomore Cassidy Bontrager scored her first career varsity goal off of a corner kick. Senior Kattie Redlinger scored a goal on a breakaway, and sophomore Renee Buckwalter scored on an assist from Meghan Redlinger. Junior Kira Kerkove had a pair of assists in the contest.

“Watching the girls play tonight was a real joy,” Mid-Prairie head coach Bristol Harris said. “This was by far the best game I have ever seen Meghan Redlinger play. She had a whole lot of open looks, but passed the ball around and let others score.”

Mid-Prairie’s defense allowed just two West Liberty shots on goal.

“Our defense was right on their game,” Harris said.

The Golden Hawks host Washington tonight at 4:30 p.m.
