DES MOINES — Northern Illinois junior Matt Mougin won his opening round match at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Thursday, but he lost his second-round match.

Mougin, unseeded at 174 pounds, upset No. 11 seed Blake Stauffer 4-2 in his first-round match. But Mougin lost a 9-1 major decision to No. 6 seed Logan Storley of Minnesota in the second round.

Mougin, who won a Class 2A state championship at 145 pounds during his senior year at Columbus Community High School in 2009, continued his tournament on the consolation side of the bracket this morning when he faced unseeded Austin Gabel of Virginia Tech. Mougin, the son of Randall and Rebecca Mougin, is now 23-11 on the season.
