Multi-county chase reported last Thursday

FAIRFIELD — An Ottumwa man was arrested Thursday after leading authorities on a high-speed chase that began in Jefferson County and ended in the City of Ottumwa.

According to a news release from the Jefferson County Attorney’s office, Ryan Lawrence Gillen, 22, of Ottumwa, was charged in Jefferson County with aggravated eluding, driving while barred, driving while revoked, reckless driving, speeding x3, and no registration. He remains in custody in the Jefferson County Jail.

The release said thatat about 2:11 p.m. on May 3, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a pink Mazda four-door on Fourth Street in Batavia for no license plates. Upon activation of the emergency lights, the driver of the Mazda accelerated and passed another vehicle on Fourth Street, eluding the deputy. A pursuit ensued taking deputies and other law enforcement through the west side of Jefferson County, into Wapello County and finally ending in the City of Ottumwa.

There were two occupants of the vehicle. The passenger was take into custody by the Wapello County Sheriff’s office and the driver was taken into custody by the Iowa State Patrol and returned to Jefferson County.

Assisting the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office were the Fairfield Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Wapello, Davis and Van Buren counties Sheriff’s office, Ottumwa Police and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
